The Problem of Climate Change: A Study of Anthropocentric Environmental Ethics

    Get PDF
Climate change is a change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over aĀ  long period of time ranging from decades to millions of years. It is also seen as a change in average weather condition, or statistical properties of the climate system when considered over a long period of time. This usually is caused by excessive carbon dioxide emission in the atmosphere and thus leads to extreme unpalatable weather condition such as excessive heat. It is clear that the human activities in the world through industrialization and other careless environmentally unfriendly actions contribute much this problem. The question here is: how can this problem be managed in this contemporary world of industrialization? This paper proceeds to make recommendations to this through an anthropocentric ethics of environment suggesting a more human centered approach to industrialization as a means to managing the problem.

This paper investigates the relevance of external reserve in an emerging capital market. The objective are in two folds, the first is to ascertain the il~fluence of external reserve in attracting foreign porf:lolio investment and the second is to examine the impact of foreign portfolio investment on capital nzarket development. To achieve these objectives, secondary data vvere obtained ji'om Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) fa ct book. The data were analysed using regression technique of the ordinwy least square. We ji11d out that there is strong positive link belween external reserve and port;folio investment, and there is a positive correlation between stock market development and extemal reserve but a negative relationship between por(folio investment and stock market capitalization in Nigeria. We recommend that more effortĀ· should be concentrated towards development of the local market and investor' friendly enl'ironment should be created to encourage foreigners to retain their capital invested in the stock market

The research work made a comparative analysis between four different methods of preserving cowpea grains for the purpose of determining the most effective. Two purposes and two research questions guided the study. Materials such as dry clean cowpea grains, Purdue improved cowpea storage (PICS) bags, Jerican with lid, Dried leaves of Azaradirachta Indica (NEEM), Actellic (storage chemical), sacks, weighing balance and string/twine. The study was conducted using five different methods which include the use of Purdue Improved Cowpea StorageĀ  (PICS) bags; use of Jerican with lid; use of dried leaves of Azaradirachta Indica; Spraying cowpea grains with diluted Actellic before bagging and bagging dry clean cowpea grains directly without any treatment. The five different set up were kept under the same condition. The use of Purdue Improved Cowpea Storage (PICS) bags and sealed Jerican proves to be the most effective methods. They both recorded 100% effectiveness as the same weight 50kg was maintained at the pre and post experimental period. This was followed by the use of Azaradirachta Indica leaves with 95.12% and the use of diluted Actellic with 91.22% respectively. The control method recorded the least weight percentage of 49.44. Useful recommendations such as the need for massive production of Purdue Improved Cowpea Storage (PICS) bags for distribution to farmers at subsidized rates, need for sponsoring of extension workers/agents for induction training/conferences by both the state and federal governments and use of campaign medium to encourage farmers to make use of sealed containers like Jericans, clay pots among others were proffered. Keywords: Comparative Analysis, Purdue, Azaradirachta Indica, Actellic and Preservatio

CLASSROOM TRANSLANGUAGING AS A LEARNING STRATEGY: THAI SECONDARY SCHOOL EFL STUDENTSā€™ PERCEPTIONS

    Get PDF
In Thai schools today, English language teaching has evolved from a traditional to an interactive approach. Translanguaging pedagogical practices are becoming more prevalent in Thai schools. There have been extensive debates among teachers and educators in Thai secondary schools regarding translanguaging pedagogy. As a result, little empirical research has been conducted on how Thai students perceive this issue. This study contributes to the existing literature by examining Thai secondary school EFL students' perceptions on the use of classroom translanguaging as a teaching/learning strategy. Data was collected from 36 Thai EFL students via questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The quantitative data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive data analysis, and the qualitative data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results showed that in Thai (EMI) classrooms it is difficult to ignore the learners' L1 (Thai) when learning a foreign language, and students had overall positive perceptions of classroom translanguaging. Limitations and implications are also highlighted.Ā  Article visualizations

Patients' views on improving sickle cell disease management in primary care: focus group discussion.

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVES: To assess sickle cell disease (SCD) patient and carer perspectives on the primary care services related to SCD that they receive from their general practitioner (GP). DESIGN: A focus group discussion was used to elicit the views of patients about the quality of care they receive from their primary health-care providers and what they thought was the role of primary care in SCD management. The focus group discussion was video recorded. The recording was then examined by the project team and recurring themes were identified. A comparison was made with notes made by two scribes also present at the discussion. SETTING: Sickle Cell Society in Brent, UK. PARTICIPANTS: Ten participants with SCD or caring for someone with SCD from Northwest London, UK. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Patients perceptions about the primary care services they received, and a list of key themes and suggestions. RESULTS: Patients and carers often bypassed GPs for acute problems but felt that GPs had an important role to play around repeat prescriptions and general health care. These service users believed SCD is often ignored and deemed unimportant by GPs. CONCLUSION: Participants wanted the health service to support primary health-care providers to improve their knowledge and understanding of SCD. Key themes and suggestions from this focus group have been used to help develop an educational intervention for general practice services that will be used to improve SCD management in primary care
